Your temperament is your inborn nature, determining how you respond to people, places, and things. Our temperament describes our ways of interacting with the world, coloring how we "do" our relationships and how we respond to the stresses of our lives. Our temperament is innate.
While our environment sculpts our personality, our temperament is the essence of who we are, and is a key component in understanding ourselves and how we can achieve happiness and emotional and spiritual wellbeing.
Your temperament is the deepest, most foundational building block of who you are and how you are. Temperament is an ancient idea supported by modern scientific research.

The Arno Temperament Profile System (APS) is a clinical diagnostic tool which, in the hands of a trained facilitator, allows you to discover your inborn, natural temperament. Knowing your temperament is an invaluable key to understanding your own nature and offers a knowledgable counselor versed in the APS insight into how to help you achieve emotional wellbeing and spiritual maturity much more quickly and clearly than traditional "talk therapy."
Developed through study of 5000 individuals, and assessed through the FIRO-B questionnaire developed in the Department of Psychiatry at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the FIRO-B and the APS have been found to have over a 90% accuracy in identifying your inborn temperament.
Continue on to see what you'll learn.
The APS measures the expressive and responsive scores in all three areas of your natural temperament:
Inclusion: our social life and socialization
Control: our decision-making processes
Affection: our deeper, close relationships
In each of these three areas, we have an inborn temperament. We may not have the same temperament in each area, and we may be a blend of temperaments in one or more areas as well. When we learn how to meet our needs in each of these above areas in alignment with our temperament in that area, we stop spinning our wheels and suffering, and can come to enjoy social, emotional, and spiritual happiness and fulfillment.
Scroll down a little more to read about the five temperaments
The five temperaments used in the Arno Profile System are:
Sanguine: Do you express your need for a great deal of social contact? Do you tend to want to control the behavior of others? Do you express and desire much love and affection?
Melancholy: Do you have the need to associate with very few people, being very selective? Do you show little control over the lives of others, accepting little control over your own life by others? Do you show very little affection, wanting only a little love and affection from others as well?
Choleric: Do you tend toward self-initiated social interaction but not that initiated by others? Do you tend to want a high level of control over others, but tolerate little control by others over your life? Do you have a high need for love and affection... but only on your own terms?
Phlegmatic: Do you desire and express a need for only a moderate amount of socialization? Do you show only a moderate amount of control over others, seeking the same from them? Are you moderate as well in your expression of, and desire for, love and affection?
Supine: Do you want to be socially included, but don't share that need? Do you hope others take great interest in, and control of, your life? Do you show little affection, but wish to receive much love and affection from others?
NOTE: These questions are simply meant to stimulate your thinking; it takes a trained professional conversant with the Arno Profile System to determine your unique temperament profile.
